Why I created Mythic Gathering — finding Magic: The Gathering games in a rural community
A letter from founder Joe: loving Magic: The Gathering in a rural town, always hunting for where people were playing, and building Mythic Gathering so MTG players can find each other more easily.
People have asked me why I created Mythic Gathering.
Honestly, it came from a frustration I've had living in a rural community — and from how much I love Magic: The Gathering.
Always looking for the next Magic game
I love playing Magic: The Gathering. Commander nights, kitchen-table games, store events — if people were shuffling decks nearby, I wanted to be there.
Finding those games wasn't always easy. I'd search Facebook groups, Discord servers, store websites, and ask around just to figure out where Magic was happening this week. Sometimes I'd discover an event after it was already over. Other times I'd realize the closest active Magic community was a pretty long drive away.
It made me think: why is it so hard for people who love the same game — especially Magic: The Gathering — to find each other?
That question became the foundation for Mythic Gathering.
Built to help Magic players find each other
My goal isn't to replace local game stores or existing Magic communities. It's to make it easier for players to discover them, for organizers to grow them, and for communities to stay connected.
I want someone who just moved to a new town — or someone living in a rural area like me — to open one place and know where people are playing Magic: The Gathering. Friday Night Magic, Commander pods, league nights, prereleases, casual playgroups — the games should be findable before they start, not after they end.
We're starting with Magic: The Gathering because it's the game that inspired all of this. It's the game I kept hunting for. Down the road, I hope Mythic Gathering can support many different tabletop communities — but Magic is where we begin, on purpose.
It's about the table
At the end of the day, Mythic Gathering isn't really about software.
It's about helping Magic players — and eventually other tabletop gamers — find a place to belong, meet new friends, and spend more time around a table playing the games they love.
